It seems everybody these days has watched some show on the television where they are doing home makeovers. Well it’s time for yours!

Before you dive in to your kitchen makeover you need to make sure you do some research first. I know it sounds like a daunting task, but trust us, in this industry you can, and probably will, get taken advantage of by a smooth talking salesman, and be left worse off than when you started. You don’t want that do you? Neither do we, this is why we have supplied a checklist for you at the bottom of this article from the Canadian Homebuilders Association.

Let’s take a look at some of the recent buzzwords that are floating around the latest tv shows surrounding kitchens; Replace, Reface, & Refinish.

Exactly, that replacing your kitchen with a new one. Taking a look at your space you determine a total overhaul is required to make this a functioning space again. This would be the solution. Remove all of the existing elements to the space and starting fresh. This is the most timely and most costly solution to a kitchen space. On average this solution starts anywhere from $10-15,000 and can go as high as $80-100,000+. If you just gasped, maybe the next two options might be something to consider.

Upon closer inspection of your kitchen, you deemed that you are happy with the space, your cabinets are in good shape but those golden oak doors with the arch and brass handles have to go! This is when a reface can be a cost effective solution. What happens in this scenario, we come in a measure all the existing doors, order new ones from our wide variety of styles. We then apply a new veneer around your cabinets so that the new doors match the boxes. In this option there are things you can add on such as additional trim work, slow close door adapters, etc. This creates the feeling of a brand new kitchen without the expense. This solution starts on average at $5000-$15,000. This is a considerable savings from the cost of new.

This is the most cost effective option. A lot of times just some new handle hardware and a coat of paint can go a long way. This is when refinishing comes in as a great solution. We specialize in a spray waterborne acrylic. This provides a finish that is consistent with factory finished cabinets. This option also allows for add on as stated in refacing, but comes in as a much more budget friendly option. This solution starts as low as $2500-8000.

So with a little education under your hat, let’s take a closer look at your kitchen and ask yourself some questions.

Are you happy with the overall layout of your space?  While answering this question we’re looking for things like function, storage, do you trip over anyone else in the space? Kids and pets don’t count, sometimes its based on size, but if it’s a large space maybe a layout change is in order.

If you answered no perhaps a new kitchen is something to consider. If you answered yes, let’s look at reface.

Are your doors falling apart or extremely worn? This answer many times is personal preference. Sometimes your doors are in good shape, but you may just be tired of them. Questions to Ask before hiring a Contractor

What is the history of your renovation company?

Experience makes a difference. Find out how and when the contractor got into the business. Ask about previous projects and request a list of past customers you can contact for references. Professional contractors are proud of the work they do and will be happy to provide this information.

What services do you offer?

Every contractor will provide a specific range of services. Some will include design services while others will work with independent designers. Some have their own staff to do the construction work while others rely on subcontractors. You need to have a clear understanding of what services the contractor can provide for your project.

Have you done renovations like ours before?

Some contractors specialize in specific types of projects, such as roof repairs or kitchen renovations. Others offer more general renovation services and can handle a wide range of projects. It is important to know that a contractor has experience with projects similar to yours.

Can we visit one of your current projects?

Visiting a work site can tell you a lot about how the contractor operates. If the contractor has a current project, ask to visit it and take note of details such as how well the site is organized and whether it is clean and tidy.

Do you carry workers’ compensation and liability insurance?

Hiring someone who is not properly insured could put you at considerable legal and financial risk. Professional contractors will provide you with proof of liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage.

What warranty do you offer on your work?

A professional contractor provides you with a written warranty that spells out what is covered and for how long. And they deliver prompt follow-up service if there are problems or defects in their work. When checking references, ask past customers about the contractor’s warranty service performance.

Checking Contractor References

Professional contractors are in the service business. A significant part of the value they provide lies in their ability to communicate with, and satisfy, their customers. That’s why it is important for you to ask for customer references. Then follow-up and contact these homeowners – surprisingly, many homeowners who ask for references never actually check them.

Talking with a contractor’s past customers can give you unique insight into how a contractor performs on the job. Don’t feel that you are imposing – if the homeowners were not willing to talk with you, the contractor would not have provided their names.**
